Much of the younger population maybe at risk of hearing loss.

That’s according to the results of a study done within the University of Michigan -- by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on children’s health.

The study adds that the main factor of this hearing loss issue within younger populations comes from earbuds -- like the popular air pods and other headphones.

The study also shows that 64 percent of parents reported their child uses some type of earbud or headphone and 74 percent believe it is fine — as the volume is not too high.

However, the report includes that this noise exposure can affect sleep, academic learning, stress levels and other health consequences.

6 News spoke with Sydney Black an Audiologist at Easterseals of Western and Central PA who says in statement part, “The potential risks include noise induced hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear canal damage/irritation, and negative social impacts. Noise induced hearing loss damages our inner ear which results in a permanent hearing loss. Permanent damage can cause increased difficulty hearing, especially in noisy situations, such as a classroom.”

If you’re concerned about your or your child’s hearing, reach out to a local Audiologist to schedule a hearing test.
