A 17-year-old student is injured after an exchange of gunfire between two groups outside Dunbar High School in northwest D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

MPD officers responded to the sounds of gunshots that occurred outside the school on N Street, NW just before 10 a.m. Officers found the girl had been grazed by a bullet that entered the school through the glass windows of a classroom, according to their preliminary investigation.

Their investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling the wrong way in the 1200 block of Kirby Street Northwest drove up and "there was a series of gunshots followed by some more gunshots," according to Leslie Parsons, assistant chief for the MPD.

Police said the shootout is unrelated to the school and the school was not a target.

At this time, we believe there was an exchange of gunfire in that block amongst individuals, however, the motive remains unknown. What we do know is that there were folks that were out there when this occurred," Parsons said.

MPD said there is a lookout for a suspect last seen running towards New York Avenue.

The girl was taken to a local hospital where she is receiving treatment and is expected to be okay. Parsons said her family is by her side.
