The severe weather turned south Wednesday after a deadly tornado wreaked havoc in the small city of Greenfield, Iowa the day before.

Severe weather storms moved through Temple, Texas Wednesday night. Temple, a city of more than 90,000 people north of Austin, issued an emergency declaration after a tornado swept through the area and caused widespread damage. Thousands of residents lost power, schools canceled Thursday's classes and the city's facilities were closed.

"Oh my gosh we have a tornado right by our house," a man says in a video capturing the twister as tornado sirens go off.

The road conditions in Temple on Thursday are considered dangerous, closed or impassible, according to KEYE. Belton police said the severe weather caused several roads throughout town to become impassible due to fallen trees and flooding.

A recreation center was set up for people seeking shelter.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries in Temple or in the wider Bell County area, which was also hit by severe thunderstorms.

Bell County, where Temple is located, could see storms again Thursday.

The National Weather Service of Fort Worth plans to conduct a storm survey to assess the extent of the damages from this storm. The report is expected to be released Thursday night, according to NWS.

The Storm Predication Center reported that more than 190 storms were submitted across the nation Wednesday.

This is a historically busy tornado season in the U.S., in an era when climate change is heightening the severity of storms around the world. April had the country's second-highest number of tornadoes on record.

Through Tuesday, 859 tornadoes had been confirmed this year, 27% more than the U.S. sees on average, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Iowa has so far recorded the most, with 81 confirmed twisters.

On Tuesday alone, the National Weather Service said it received 23 tornado reports, with 21 in Iowa.
