SCI Huntingdon inmate back in custody after stealing vehicle in escape attempt

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - An inmate is back in custody after he walked off of work detail Friday, police said. According to police, the inmate was on work detail on state Route 26 near the Walmart when he walked off around 12:30 p.m.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - An inmate is back in custody after he walked off of work detail Friday, police said.

According to police, the inmate was on work detail on state Route 26 near the Walmart when he walked off around 12:30 p.m.

Department of Corrections identified the inmate as 26-year-old John Adam Bertolette.

Police said Bertolette stole a vehicle from a nearby housing development and tried to escape.

Troopers began a search and spotted, then stopped the vehicle just south of Marklesburg Borough.

Bertolette was taken into custody without incident around 1:20 p.m.

Bertolette is serving a 10-20 year sentence on a causing a catastrophe conviction from York County and has been at SCI Huntingdon since 2012.

The Department of Corrections is conducting an investigation and has placed the prison on locked down and have suspended all visitations until further notice.
