Pirates top pitching prospect Paul Skenes to begin 2024 season in Triple-A

PITTSBURGH (WJAC) Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Paul Skenes will reportedly begin the 2024 season with the organization's Triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians, team GM Ben Cherington told reporters Monday.

Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Paul Skenes will reportedly begin the 2024 season with the organization's Triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians, team GM Ben Cherington told reporters Monday.

Earlier this month, the team announced that Skenes would begin the season in the minor leagues, but did not specify whether it would be in Double-A or Triple-A.

Skenes was drafted by Pittsburgh last year as the number one overall pick in the MLB amateur draft, just weeks after he helped guide the LSU Tigers to a collegiate National Baseball Championship.

By mid-August, Skenes was promoted to the Pirates' Double-A affiliate, the Altoona Curve.

He then made his Curve debut in late August before being "shut down" for the season in early September.

Skenes appeared in two games for the Pirates during Spring Training, allowing just one run, on three hits, in three combined innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will begin their 2024 season on Thursday, March 28th, against the Miami Marlins.

The team's home opener is scheduled for Friday, April 5th against the Baltimore Orioles.

As for the Indians, they will begin their season on Friday, March 29th, against the Cincinnati Reds' affiliate, the Louisville Bats.

The Indians' home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2nd, against the St. Louis Cardinals' affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds.
