Ex-USDA official casts Menendez as villain in Egyptian meat controversy

NEW YORK (AP) — A former top U.S. agricultural official cast Sen. Bob Menendez as a villain at his bribery trial Friday, saying he tried to stop him from disrupting an unusual sudden monopoly that developed five years ago over the certification of meat exported to Egypt. A Manhattan federal court jury heard the official, Ted McKinney, recount a brief phone call he received from the Democrat in 2019 soon after New Jersey businessman Wael Hana was granted the sole right to certify that meat exported to Egypt from the United States conformed to Islamic dietary requirements.

Family of UPenn student files lawsuit against Panera, claiming daughter died after consuming heavily

A 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student with a heart condition died after reportedly drinking Panera Bread's new “charged lemonade” drink. A large cup contains more caffeine than cans of Red Bull and Monster Energy drinks combined, according to the lawsuit. The suit was filed on behalf of the New Jersey parents of Sarah Katz. The legal complaint, which was filed Monday, calls the beverage a “dangerous energy drink" and argues that Panera failed to appropriately warn consumers about its ingredients.

IUP to issue housing, dining refunds to students
