Civil rights group calls for changes after airman's shooting death by Florida deputy

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) — The Southern Poverty Law Center is calling for the end of police violence against Black people in the wake of the shooting death of Air Force airman Roger Fortson by a Florida deputy. Others are urging the community to not jump to conclusions until the Florida Department of Law Enforcement finishes its investigation. The military community is mourning the loss of the 23-year-old senior airman who was stationed at Hurlburt Field.

IRS reforms target wealthier taxpayers and companies, address race disparity in audits

WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS said Thursday that it has taken steps to address a wide disparity in audit rates between Black taxpayers and other filers, and is more closely examining the returns of larger numbers of wealthy people and major companies. “We are overhauling compliance efforts to advance our commitment to fair, equitable, and effective tax administration and hold ourselves accountable to taxpayers we serve," according to an annual update from the agency.

North Carolina man and bear give each other a scare

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A Ring camera captured the moment an Asheville man and a bear came face to face, giving each other a scare. People who've lived in western North Carolina for a while are typically used to coexisting with black bears. However, few get as close of an encounter as David Oppenheimer. At the end of the day on Tuesday, April 11, Oppenheimer said he was relaxing in a chair in his carport when he heard his Ring camera chime.

Toby Terrace residents to move back in after fire

BROCKWAY, Pa. -- We have an update to an apartment building fire out of Jefferson County. On January 29th, a fire tore through Toby Terrace Apartments in Brockway leaving 15 people without a home. Fortunately all of those people had places to go after being forced out. Thursday we learned they will soon be back in their apartments. Our cameras captured a restoration company working at Building B of the complex Thursday afternoon.

UPMC Somerset opens new facility in Davidsville

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — UPMC Somerset officially opened its new family practice in Davidsville on Thursday. The grand opening included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house. The planning for the facility started in March of 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic. Now that the family practice is open, officials say it will provide rural communities with more access to healthcare. “It’s important for patients to have a relationship with a primary care provider to maintain good quality health.
