In New York's subway shutdown, an unthinkable departure

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s not the end of the line. But it once was. When the first New York subway line connected Lower Manhattan to Harlem in 1904, the stop at 145th Street was its terminus. Since that inaugural run, the subway has never ceased running. There were brief blips of interruption after 9/11 and in the last decade for hurricanes and blizzards, but for more than 115 years, the rumbling on the rails has kept the click-clack heartbeat of New York.

Route 219 expansion project nears completion as officials host public discussion on last leg of proj

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — PennDOT and the Maryland Department of Transportation hosted another open house Thursday to discuss the Route 219 project. The meeting was held at the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department and allowed the public to not only look at the proposed plans but also provide feedback on the project. The project is proposing a new 8 mile long four lane highway from the end of the Meyersdale bypass to the newly constructed portion of Route 219 in Maryland.

Student found with Airsoft BB gun at school now facing charges, police say

INDIANA, Pa. (WJAC) — According to a press release from Pennsylvania State Police, a student at the Homer-Center School District is facing charges after bringing an unloaded Airsoft BB gun to school Friday morning. Troopers say they responded to a report by the school district administration that a 13-year-old student was found in possession of an unloaded Airsoft pistol with an orange tip. A subsequent investigation revealed the student had concealed the Airsoft BB gun in his backpack and shown it to at least one other student at school, troopers said.

Teacher accused of sexually abusing 8 children

ANNE ARUNDEL COUUNTY, Md. — An Anne Arundel County elementary school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing eight students. Matthew Schlegel, 44, was taken into custody Thursday morning at his home in Severna Park. He faces more than 30 charges, ranging from second-degree assault to sex abuse of a minor. Schlegel is a third-grade math teacher at Severna Park Elementary school. According to charging documents, all of the alleged victims are current or former students of Schlegel, and the alleged abuse occurred in the classroom.

CamTran unveils four new buses to be added to Cambria County fleet

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — On Monday, CamTran introduced four new buses to their fleet that serves Cambria County. Community leaders and local law makers attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Johnstown Monday morning where the buses were unveiled. Officials say the buses were bought using "mostly federal dollars" secured by Congressman John Joyce. The new buses are made in America and feature wheelchair accessible seating and new bike rack systems.
