MLB suspends Pirates pitcher, manager after being ejected during game vs Padres

Pittsburgh (WJAC) On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced that Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton and pitcher Angel Perdomo were suspended after they were ejected during Tuesday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced that Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton and pitcher Angel Perdomo were suspended after they were ejected during Tuesday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

Perdomo was suspended three games after the league determined that he "intentionally threw" at Padres' third baseman Manny Machado in the 7th inning of the Pirates 5-1 loss to San Diego.

Machado was struck in the back by a 98 mph fastball after Perdomo gave up a solo homerun to outfielder Juan Soto.

“I gave all my best to Soto, all my pitches,” Perdomo said after the game Tuesday. “He got the home run against me. And then against Machado, I just tried to come in and went too far in and hit him by mistake.”

Shelton, who served his one-game suspension on Wednesday, defended his pitcher, claiming that the incident was not intentional.

“Ball just got away from him; it hit him,” the manager said. “The umpires got together, which they’re supposed to do. After they got together, they decided on an ejection.”
