Altoona Area High School held a grand re-opening Wednesday morning of an upcycling shop, named after a student killed in the Columbine High School shooting.
The project is called Rachel’s Closet, named after Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed in the shooting.
Madison Aboud with Rachel’s Closet says the project was inspired by Rachel’s wish to spread kindness and positivity.
Students can come to the shop for items such as clothing, school supplies and personal hygiene items free of charge.
Aboud says Rachel’s Closet is a place where students who are struggling can go to feel safe.
"We aren't doing it to judge, we do it because we love and care about every single person in this community and within this school, and are willing to do anything we can to help them and make them feel comfortable in their own skin,” Aboud said.
Students are encouraged to donate items they no longer need, and there are designated periods throughout the school day when students can access the closet.
