local furniture store shares experience with rising gas prices

Young American Furniture has always delivered chairs, tables, couches, and other household goods for free to their customers.

Since the pandemic, even more delivery requests have been "coming to the table."

That's according to Bill Colvin, the Vice President of Young American Furniture.

"Our delivery area has expanded quite a bit since the pandemic. It has been getting a lot more out Altoona, Bedford, and Somerset," he told 6 News.

But with the average price of gas in Pennsylvania reaching $5 a gallon, tensions are 'inflating.'

Young American Furniture has eight box trucks -- with four always out on the road at once -- averaging 8 to 10 miles to a gallon.

"We just filled up two trucks yesterday. It was over $380 to fill those two trucks up. So, it has gone up," Colvin said.

It's not just products going out costing them more, but also products coming in.

"The freight companies have put a fuel surcharge on all their bills. Roughly about a 20 percent increase. So, that has gone up quite a bit," he said.

He says, because of the freight situation, the cost of their merchandise also has been raised slightly.

'Fueling' frustration for local businesses and customers alike.
