Imagine this — you’re given the opportunity to perform in one of the worlds most popular New Years Day parades.

That's what happened to a local college student.

“It was a great experience," said Shayann Hill, a freshman at Slippery Rock University. "It was definitely scary the first day, seeing all those big buildings and all those there’s so many people, there’s big crowds you know their all moving fast pace and you’re just like okay I don’t know what’s going on, but it was really amazing.”

Hill — a Johnstown native — told Channel 6 about her 'once in a lifetime' opportunity to perform in London's 2024 New Years Day parade with her college band.

“I guess the band has been doing like amazing, I’m mean it’s great," added Hill. "It’s crazy that I’m like in it. I’m like how I in this amazing band am. It made up of a bunch of different majors, its not just music majors. I mean we make up majority of it, but there’s a lot of different majors.”

Hill says she grew up with music playing a huge role in her life — beginning as a student in the Greater Johnstown School District.

“So, I started playing the flute in fourth grade and you know I just kind of like fell in love with music from a really early age and it started here in Johnstown,” Hill said.

Hills mother says she is so proud of her daughter and all of her accomplishments thus far.

“She is just so amazing; I am so proud of her,” said Janelle Boback. “I’m just so happy that she had this opportunity its like once in a lifetime. She can share it with her kids, her grandkids and at a young age being 18 she has so much more he can experience.”

Hill says she is studying music therapy at S.R.U — with the goal to help people through the power of music.
