What is a gob?

To some of people, a gob is a sweet treat, but to Solomon Run Ladies Auxiliary member Linda Haynes, it’s a legacy.

“As far as doing gobs, it's been what, 30 years? It's been at least over 30 years,” Haynes said.

Haynes has been coming to the Solomon Run Station every Monday for the past 17 years to make some of Johnstown’s award-winning gobs.

“Every couple of weeks, we sell $2,000 to $3,000 in gobs that we sell,” Haynes said.

Haynes is not alone; she’s joined by dozens of other women who also make gobs to sell.

“We have real, dedicated ladies,” Haynes said.

Their dedication is paying off; just last year, they were able to donate close to $100,000 to the Richland Township Fire Department.

“We gave the fire department $50,000 at Christmas after we worked very hard,” Haynes said, “but now, we pay for some of the repairs to the station, rather than just give them the money.”

Those repairs include a new parking lot and new bathroom.

Haynes says all the hard work is done to benefit the community.

“I’m proud that we did a good job and that we're not just putting time in here,” Haynes said. “(It’s not) A waste of time.”

Haynes said soon enough, people will see an electronic sign outside of the Solomon Run Fire Station, which is being funded by the gob sales.

She also says all the hard work is far from over, and because of the high demand for the gobs, they’re in need of volunteers.

People interested in helping out can go to the Solomon Run Fire Station in Richland Township on Monday mornings to sign up.
