WASHINGTON (TND) — Foreign terrorist organizations (FTOS) or their supporters "may seek to exploit" LGBTQIA+-related events and venues during the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned.
"FTO efforts to commit or inspire violence against holiday celebrations, including Pride celebrations or LGBTQIA+-related venues, are compounded by the current heightened threat environment in the United States and other western countries," the agencies issued in a public service announcement.
The organizations said the threats could be sent online, through email, in person or via mail.
In February, ISIS "called for followers to conduct attacks on unidentified soft targets, although the attacks and targets were not specific to LGBTQIA+ venues," the public service announcement stated.
After the Pulse shooting nearly eight years ago, ISIS "praised the attack" that killed 49 and wounded 53 at the gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
"After the Pulse shooting, pro-ISIS messaging praised this attack as one of the high-profile attacks in Western countries, and FTO supporters celebrated it." the FBI and DHS wrote.
Probing security measures at events or venues, photography of security-related equipment and unusual surveillance or interest in buildings are possible indicators of potential threat activity, the FBI warned.
To report a threat, it is recommended to call the FBI field office, closest international office, or dial 1-800-225-5324.
"Be aware of your surroundings at all times and report suspicious activities to the authorities," officials said.
