'Distressed' aircraft makes emergency 'belly landing' at Johnstown Airport

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) Officials say a distressed aircraft had to make an emergency landing Monday afternoon at the Johnstown airport. First responders were put on standby after officials said the pilot notified air traffic control of a landing gear issue.

Officials say a “distressed” aircraft had to make an emergency landing Monday afternoon at the Johnstown airport.

First responders were put on standby after officials said the pilot notified air traffic control of a landing gear issue.

Authorities say the rear landing gear would not lock into place.

Local first responders were called to the airport as the plane circled above to burn fuel before coming in for what's called a “belly landing.”

The pilot burned his fuel to limit the severity of any potential fire caused by the landing.

Our camera was rolling as the plane touched down and crews made sure the pilot was okay.

Officials say after removing the plane from the runway, they checked for and removed any parts or debris left behind that could be an issue for any other planes looking to land.
