CINCINNATI (WKRC) — A local family honored their mother’s battle with cancer by giving out free care packages.
They collected comfort items and delivered them to others undergoing chemotherapy.
Mother’s Day now has a different meaning for the Sunday family.
Their mom Teri died of metastatic breast cancer in 2021.
The family said she always had her chemo bag to make things easier.
"She didn't receive it from anybody. She got a bag, a tote that she had herself, and she made up her own bag. And she just put what she loved in it. She had a lot of candy in her bag," said Amy Sunday, daughter and co-organizer.
Seeing their mom's ups and downs, she said they were inspired to create Teri's Chemo Bags.
They fill them with goodies approved by Teri.
There are socks, Chapstick, a neck pillow, a hat and more.
"They're there for hours, all day, sometimes 3, 4, 5, 6 hours," she said.
The five sisters work together to fill them and deliver them to patients at Christ Hospital.
Amy said they made 12 the first year they put them together, then 24, and this year, the goal is 36.
"She still worked. She would still call all of us. 'How are you doing?' And it's like, no, 'How are you doing,'" said Amy.
The Sunday family takes care of the supplies, but they also accept donations.
They drop off the bags on the anniversary of Teri's passing.
"It doesn't get easier. You know, you, yeah, it just doesn't," said Amy.
She said it's not easy celebrating Mother's Day, but they turned their sadness into hope for others.
"Even if it's for a second to brighten somebody's day in that chair where my mother once sat, then our mission is accomplished," said Amy.
