Hundreds of athletes from around the area and surrounding states made the trip to Cambria County this weekend.

The Varsity Encore Cheerleading Championship -- called the "Encore Johnstown Showdown" -- is being held at the Cambria County War Memorial.

Organizers say just under 1,000 athletes and about 2,500 fans are expected to fill up the 1st Summit Arena over the weekend.

This event marks the first cheerleading competition to be held at the arena since 2010.

Leaders with the cheerleading company tell 6 News that it's great to be "back to normal" after COVID-19 changed their operations.

"Honestly, it's a lot more hectic than during COVID, because with COVID, you had specific things that you could do. We're back at it again. Not many restrictions. I'm excited that we're back doing this again," said Justin Mizen, Event Coordinator with Varsity All Star.

Doors will open at 8:00 A.M. Sunday morning with the competition beginning at 9:00.

They will have 3 sessions throughout the day.
