Cambridge Ebensburg boasts zero cases among residents during pandemic

As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across the state and country, a senior living community with locations across Pennsylvania is taking pride in keeping the virus away from their residents.

Officials with Cambridge Retirement Living say they’ve adopted policies and procedures at the onset of the pandemic that have successfully prevented COVID-19 from entering any of their seven communities, including Cambridge Ebensburg.

Cambridge Ebensburg, formerly Rebekah Manor, is the iconic red-roofed building that sits along Admiral Peary Highway.

Cambridge took ownership of the building late last year and is in the process of a $1 million renovation that includes the addition of a movie theater, beauty salon, therapy and fitness center, wellness suite, computer lab and updated resident rooms, common areas and dining room and a new secured dementia care neighborhood within the facility.

Officials say the new renovations have helped their residents, especially during COVID-19 isolations.

They say their residents have enjoyed being virtual tourists to far off places like Hawaii or Lancaster in the new movie theater while enjoying themed meals centered around their journeys.

Also, during the pandemic, officials say residents have kept busy with activities like judging and participating in a scarecrow contest or participating in socially distanced outdoor concerts.

Residents are also able to participate in outdoor church services and enjoy the tastes of the region through “Food Truck Fridays.”

Officials say residents have been able to visit with their loved ones throughout the pandemic through a specially designed alcove on the outside of Cambridge Ebensburg, called “The Hideaway.”

The Hideaway allows residents to see their loved ones through large beauty salon windows and speak to them using baby monitors.

“Family visits are so important to our residents. Not everyone is able to get on Zoom,” says Cambridge Ebensburg Administrator April Adams.

While caring for their residents, officials say they’re also dedicated to serving the community.

Cambridge Ebensburg is currently holding a “Warm Winter Wear Drive.”

They’re collecting hats, gloves and coats to help support the Salvation Army, Clergy Support Group and Johnstown Women’s shelter.

They have a contactless donation box set up in the front of the building and are welcoming donations until Dec. 11.
