Aiden Deininger charged with attempted homicide of Scranton detective

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) On Wednesday, authorities announced charges against a Lackawanna County man accused of shooting Scranton Police Detective Kyle Gilmartin as he sat in a car while on duty.

On Wednesday, authorities announced charges against a Lackawanna County man accused of shooting Scranton Police Detective Kyle Gilmartin as he sat in a car while on duty.

“Today our department and the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office are announcing the arrest of Aiden Deininger, a 20-year-old male from Old Forge Pennsylvania,” says PSP Commander, Maj. Michael T. Carroll.

The news comes after the arrest of 19-year-old Jeremiah Cleveland who allegedly is responsible for firing shots in the Hill section of the city on the 10th and 11th.

According to court documents, three Scranton Police Detectives were sitting in an unmarked Chevy Impala police vehicle, actively investigating a planned shooting, and looking for a grey 2006 Ford Fusion.

Documents state Deininger allegedly used Instagram Live stating “The cops are looking for me right now and I’m still spinnin'.”

Officers were able to locate the vehicle in a parking lot at the intersection of N. Main Avenue and N. Swetland Street.

Gilmartin and other detectives encountered a person, now known as Deininger, and without warning, he shot into the car.

“The suspect spotted the unmarked police vehicle and fired multiple rounds into it, striking Detective Gilmartin twice in the head,” Carroll explained.

Detective Sergeant Joseph Lafferty returned fire while Deininger tried to flee on foot to the nearby Ford Fusion but collapsed and was taken into custody.

“Deininger’s actions were brazen, reckless, and without regard to human life,” says District Attorney Mark Powell.

Deininger is charged with three counts of attempted homicide of law enforcement officers, criminal homicide, and others.

Through the investigation, DA Powell feels the shooting was intentional.

“We believe the evidence will show that when he fired, he knew that these individuals were police officers,” Powell said.

According to Geisinger, Gilmartin is said to have had one bullet lodged under the scalp in the skull whereas another traveled through his skull and is lodged in the back of his brain.

As of Wednesday, the investigation remains ongoing.

Investigators say that bail has been denied for the suspect. Once he is healthy enough to leave the hospital, he will be incarcerated.
