In the early 1800’s, advancements in transportation lead to a boom in the industrialization of the country, and, in turn, the personal fortunes of the railroading, iron and steel magnates that owned the respective operations.

As fortunes grew, so did the desire to seek the periodic abandonment of the hustle and bustle of the big cities, which were soiled with the sediment of industry.

In the early 1880’s, their gaze landed upon a tract of land in modern day South Fork.

There, they built an exclusive resort that served the tastes of the privileged class.

It also served as the foundation for what would become one of the largest manmade disasters in American history.

The members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club were able to indulge their senses with the natural beauty of Pennsylvania’s heartland until the storms came in the evening of May 30th, 1889.
