DUBOIS - Four baseball fields in the city of DuBois are currently undergoing construction and upgrades.

AstroTurf is expected to be laid in the outfield of Showers Field on Maple Avenue starting Wednesday.

The new Challenger Field in the city park has been under construction since the beginning of August.

Currently, the concession stand, press box and dugouts are being built. The field will also get AstroTurf.

The Challenger Field will provide athletic opportunities for those with special physical and mental needs.

The Way Memorial Little League field and Senior Little League Field in the city park will also see AstroTurf in the infields.

Dave Roman, owner of Dave Roman Excavating, is the general contractor for the work.

“It will bring different towns into the community to play ball and support the local businesses, hotels and restaurants,” Roman said. “At different times, you could see two, three or four hotels filled up when games are being played here.”

Roman said the Challenger Field will also be used by Penn State DuBois and high school teams.

City Manager Herm Suplizio said the total cost of all fields is about $3.8 million, paid for through recreational and other grants.

All the fields are expected to be ready to play ball by the spring of 2018.
